St. Nicholas fortress is situated at the entrance to the Šibenik channel, and its beauty will leave you breathless.
St. Nicholas fortress is a coastal fortification and was built in 16th century. Not far from today’s fort there were two towers with sharp chains that prevented enemy ships to enter the channel.
Those two towers were demolished after the fort was built. The reason for building the fort was the fall of the city of Skradin under Turkish attack in 1522.
Conquesting the city of Skradin, the Turks gained a good position for building sea connection with interior land, which was important for trading.
The most interesting thing about fortress is its triangle shape, as forts of that kind of shape were rare in Croatia and in Europe.
The fort was never used for military purposes.
